Holmby Hall stands at the heart of Westwood Village — the first building erected in what became one of the most significant planned commercial districts in American history. Designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann and built by the Janss Brothers in 1929, its 110-foot clock tower has anchored the Village for nearly a century.
Today, Holmby Hall is home to a curated community of restaurants, shops, and offices that carry forward the building's legacy as the crossroads of Westwood.
Under new stewardship since 2025, Holmby Hall is undergoing thoughtful restoration — preserving its historic character while preparing for the next generation of Westwood Village businesses.

Holmby Hall was the very first retail building erected in Westwood Village — part of the Janss Investment Company's vision for only the second planned suburban shopping district ever built in the United States. The building's upper floors originally served as UCLA's first women's dormitory while the ground floor bustled with shops and the Janss family drugstore.
Designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann — the architect behind the Hoover Dam and Greystone Mansion — the Spanish Colonial Revival building has remained remarkably unchanged for nearly a century.
